Nidecker Instinct Series: Inspired by Nature
5th January 2022 | 0 comments
With the new Instinct range, Nidecker returns to nature, which is an endless source of inspiration. After all, the evolution of life on Earth has taken billions of years, so there is no shortage of fine-tuned designs in the realm of plants and animals. How is this reflected in the new snowboard collection?
Life on our planet has been evolving and improving for 3.8 billion years, making it in some ways the largest research and design project ever. With nearly nine million species of plants and animals, the possibilities for inspiration in natural design are almost endless, so let's take a look at what and how Nidecker has cleverly borrowed to take their boards to the next level.
Concept of biomimicry
No, we're not making up words. Biomimicry is a true scientific discipline that seeks to mimic natural design and translate it into human creations. This is exactly what the shapers and engineers at Nidecker set out to do when they decided to study natural designs, their shapes, functions and motions in detail. For example, how the shape of a hawk's tail influences its flight characteristics, how water flows around aquatic animals, or how fish can change their shape to create a natural carving like on a board.
This simple but effective approach yields unexpected results. Snowboards designed according to natural design principles have been shown to flow more gracefully, rolling naturally from edge to edge rather than the usual "flat" connection a modern snowboard delivers. Taking inspiration from Mother Nature, in short, made it easier and smoother to ride in her own environment.
Who is Instinct Series made for?
Snowboards inspired by nature will be especially appreciated by riders looking for a better connection with the board and will appreciate the new shapes that bring a new surf-like experience of curves. These riders include Nidecker team riders Shin Biyajima and Mathieu Crepel, who know that if you want to enjoy snowboarding to the fullest, you need to work closely with nature.
The Instinct Diaries
In conjunction with the new Nidecker Instinct Series, there's a cool trilogy called The Instinct Diaries, where Samuel McMahon shows off some amazing snowboard filmmaking, while Shin, Mathieu or Lewis Sonvico put the new boards in context. Expect that and then you'll understand what all this playing on David Attenborough is really about!
1: ReTrace
In the first episode of ReTrace, French freerider Lewis Sonvico shows you how he dealt with the challenging 20/21 season by slowing down, getting closer to the rhythm of nature and literally walking in its footsteps.
2: Kimochi-Ii
The second episode explores the life of Shin Biyajima, a Nagano native who paints clean lines with breathtaking grace into Japan's iconic powder. And it wouldn't be possible without an understanding of nature.
3: Reset
The last entry of the Instinct Diaries series is brought to you by legend Mathieu Crepel. For him, last year's unusual winter was also an impulse to rethink his approach to life and riding - a reset. Besides snowboarding, he enjoys shaping surfboards and lately, more than ever, he's looking to be in harmony with nature.
