Brand Ortovox comes from Taufkirchen in the south of Germany. It is engaged in the production of first layers, technical sweatshirts and avalanche equipment that helps to save lives. Today we will take their functional clothing into spotlight.

This year, Ortovox came up with a new collection of clothing suitable for mountains that virtually shines with colors. What process lies behind the production of these great pieces?

Fair conditions for all

Wool is a key material for Ortovox - their products combine its natural properties with the functions of modern textile materials. This helps to create clothes that will keep you warm wherever you go.

In Ortovox, they really appreciate wool as material. They also know that the way sheep feel, and how they live, directly affects not only the quality of their lives, but also the quality of their wool. In 2017, an initiative called Ortovox Wool Promise thus came to life.

It defines 64 criteria that must be met by Ortovox wool suppliers. It further defines 4 main principles of cooperation, which include sustainable land management, animal welfare, personal relations with suppliers and the traceability of the whole process.

Swiss Wool and Merino Wool

Ortovox uses two types of wool in the manufacture of its products. Merino Wool and the so-called Swiss Wool, which comes from the Swiss Alps. Swiss Wool is used as thermal insulation in jackets and some avalanche backpacks, while merino wool is used for manufacturing of functional underwear and second layers of clothing.

In addition to that, Ortovox managed to achieve another milestone this year - the first and second layers of clothing are being manufactured entirely in the European Union. For example, processing of wool and conversion to wool yarn takes place in the traditional family manufactory in Austria.
