Water, surfing and chill - this year's Surfchamp, the Czech and Slovak Surfing Championship, took place at the end of June in Seignosse, France on the Atlantic coast. A little bit of nostalgia has yet not hurt anyone, so read the article and look how perfect it was. And if you missed it, there will be one again next year!
Quiksilver and Roxy Czech & Slovak Surfing Championship was scheduled for the last week of June, i.e. June 21-30. And who has ever been to a Surfchamp knows that it's always an eventful experience. Best Czechoslovak surfers concentrated in one single place and determined to do their best? Ou yeah! This year was the twentieth in a row, and since we, the people of SNOWBOARD ZEZULA, are surfing addicts and adore events in a great group of people, we have also been one of Surfchamp's main partners for several years now.
Surfchamp - a small World Surf League
The concept of the whole competition was the same as the one of the World Surf League: the contestants were first divided into four-member groups and then each one of them was given a thirty-minute surf ride, where they had a chance to show off a bit and show what's really in them. The evaluation included the two best ridden waves. The two highest ranked surfers then advanced to the next round. Surfers in the categories of men, women, as well as girls and boys under the age of fourteen could strive for victory.
Oliva with the gold, new talents emerging
Otmar Oliva, who knows the waves there very well, was the absolute winner among all the rivals. He became the Czech and Slovak surfing champion for 2019. The second place was taken by Martin Černík - the coach of the current Czech snowboard team. The third place, in the end, belonged to Robert Chadim. And last but not least, the twenty-year-old Timon Matěna, who made his way to the men's finals and grabbed a fourth place is a new talent emerging on the Czech surfing scene!
„I love coming back here, year after year. We had the perfect weather and cool waves all the week. My work is my hobby. What more could I wish for?“
Otmar Oliva
Make waves, move mountains
Jana Kašová, who lives by the ocean in Portugal so she is practically married to her surfboard, really nailed it in the girls' category. The name of the emerging talent and new hope for Czech women's surfing is Anna Růtová, who took the second place. Šárka Pančochová, whom you know as a great Czech snowboarder, also got to the TOP 3. The girl knows how to ride. Not only the snow, but the waves, too!
„It is an ideal summer preparation for the upcoming winter. It was a lot of fun for me to take part in the competition.“
Šárka Pančochová

Of course, the whole week was not just about competing. Alongside to the pros, complete beginners could also try the waves and join the surfing school. So if you were still hesitant to learn surfing this year and didn't even know where you could do so, now that you are clear about it, we can count on you next year. And as long as you know how to stand on the board already, we can just go catching the waves together!
