Tips and Tricks for Worry-Free Splitboarding

How to... Splitboard

26th January 2023 | 0 comments

Trust that even if you've been splitboarding for several seasons, at least one of these tips will be new to you. Take a lesson from the seasoned pros at Spark R&D, from whom we've learned these tricks.

Proper preparation for a splitboard tour, being alert and moving respectfully on the mountain, or having tools and spare binding screws in your pockets - these are all absolute essentials. It's life hacks like these that come with real experience that will make you a pro. We're going to make it a little easier for you by showing you a few of these tricks.

1. The "Ski" Carry

Sometimes there are situations when you have to take the split off even when climbing and walk a short section of the ridge on your own. Or you just need to get back across the tarmac to the snow-covered trail. Don't risk any injuries by carrying the splitboard and put both boards together with the base facing each other, as you do with skis. Use the elasticity of the straps on the bindings, wrap them around the folded boards and fasten the straps from the opposite binding into them. The boards stick together and you can put them on your shoulder! When you can hop back on the trail, the split is ready to go with the straps on.

2. Use Your Boot

It sounds a bit like science fiction that someone would complain about fresh powder before a backcountry run. But imagine needing to put your bindings onto your pucks in the downhill position and your board sinking into the snow every time you try. Before you start getting upset, try resting the edge of the split on your own boot. This will prevent the board from sinking further into the powder, plus you'll create a counter pressure with your foot that will make it easier to slide the binding on. Click, and that's it! Enjoy the downhill without the fuss.

3. The Beer Caddy

We get it. You're having an internal struggle with yourself, debating whether or not to bring a beer in your backpack on a backcountry trip when that ultralight gear cost so much money. But if you're heading up the mountain with your buddies, throw a few cans in their backpack at a moment's notice. What the eyes can't see, the heart (or rather the back) won't hurt. We admit this tip is a little mean, but chances are they'll thank you for the beer on the hill.

4. The Ice Scraper

You're finally facing your dream ride! Hold on. If you're gonna climb again, take care of the climbing skins first. Before you connect the boards for the descent, stick one of them into the snow to hold it firmly. Grab the climbing skin at both ends and use the inner, blunt edge of the board to wipe off any snow and ice that has got caught on the glue. Then carefully take the skins off and head out to meet the powder.

5. Skins In the Jacket

When it freezes to the point of total unbearability, sometimes even the glue on the skins starts to crack. Clean the skins carefully and store them in the inside pocket of your jacket, or wherever they can enjoy your body heat. The adhesive will get better, and when you've ridden down the hill, it'll be ready to hike again. But in general, remember to take loving care of your skins, always carrying a protective bag and other handy accessories.

6. The Lip Balm hack

When you pull out the strawberry lip balm at the split, don't let the "huh?" looks from your friends deter you. Frost is tricky, and sometimes even the fanciest bindings get stiff. That's where the lip balm comes in! You can lubricate any component with it. For example, after lubricating a highback, you can lower it with a flick of a ski pole and get a round of applause from your mates.

PS: Strawberry scented balsam is not a necessity, good old deer tallow will work too.

So, you're all packed?

You can't get that beer in our shop, but you can buy everything else in a few clicks. Check out our freeride equipment - we have everything you'll need for a split and we'll be happy to help you choose.
